ICE spokesman quit over descriptions of 800 people evading arrest: report

The San Francisco spokesman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement has reportedly resigned because of what he viewed as false statements from the Trump administration and ICE about recent immigration sweeps in Northern California.

Although James Schwab did not discuss the specifics of his resignation, sources told the San Francisco Chronicle in an article published Monday that he was “frustrated” with the statements officials made arguing that 800 undocumented immigrants were able to avoid arrest because Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf issued a public warning about immigration raids the day before they began.

Schwab thought the 800 figure was too high and reportedly wanted the agency to correct it. He also did not want to avoid questions about the figure from the media, the Chronicle reported.

During the four-day operation, ICE made 232 arrests.

“864 criminal aliens and public safety threats remain at large in the community, and I have to believe that some of them were able to elude us thanks to the mayor’s irresponsible decision,” acting ICE Director Thomas Homan said on the third day of the operation.

The president will visit California on Tuesday for the first time as president to inspect prototypes for his proposed border wall along the southern border.
